ROBERT STANFORD ESTATE
Situated on the southern slopes of the Kleinrivier Mountains and overlooking the peaceful village of Stanford, this historic estate (anno 1855) is steeped in Overberg history. Owned by the enterprising Sir Robert Stanford, the farm became the food basket of the area. He shipped fresh produce to Cape Town in his own cutter, mooring it in the cove which still bears his name.
Wine has been produced here since the 1890s and when the Huguenot Isak du Toit bought the farm in 1909 he added more vineyards and a winery. The vineyards on the granite slopes overlooking the Kleinrivier Valley are ideal for producing wines which are an expression of the unique cool climate terroir. Over recent years the estate has undergone another renewal under the ownership of Jan Malan and new vineyards include noble white and red varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
An environmentally friendly approach to farming includes membership of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative and the Kleinrivier Conservancy which ensures that the more than 200 Fynbos species, abundant wildlife and the vineyards can thrive together in total harmony.
