LUDDITE
The Verburg family is exuberant and enthusiastic about their farm on the Bot River hillside – and their wine, Luddite Shiraz, is thriving under the passionate guidance of winemaker Niels Verburg. Luddite Wines, situated on the eastern slopes of the Houw Hoek Mountains, 1,5km from the village of Bot River, was founded in 1999 with the sole aim of making world class Shiraz. The south eastern slopes are ideal for long ripening while no irrigation ensures a small berry size and concentrated flavours, resulting in well-balanced Shiraz with classic spicy characteristics.
Being a Luddite, explains Niels, is a way of life that is mindful of the use of unnecessary technologies and mechanisation. Individuality, and practicing his craft conscientiously, is the foundation of Luddite Wines.
