HERMANUS-PIETERSFONTEIN
Hermanuspietersfontein, once the original name of the village founded in 1855, is the name of one of the most prominent cellars in the area. With winemaking under the watchful eye of Bartho Eksteen, also known as Monsieur Sauvignon Blanc, the wines, all with Afrikaans names like Kleinboet, Die Arnoldus, Swartskaap, Posmeester and Bloos, are well received from Soweto to Sweden. The all-Afrikaans branding is in honour of Hermanus Pieters, the teacher who came to the region from the Netherlands in the early 1800s to teach farmers’ children in Dutch, forerunner to Afrikaans. The cellar is known for its premium range of Sauvignon blancs, Bordeaux and Rhone-style blends. The grapes come from the Biodiversity in Wine Initiative champion farm, where the philosophy ‘Good Earth makes Better Wine’ is strictly adhered to. Cottages on the farm are popular with nature lovers seeking natural beauty and tranquility away from the city. The Food & Wine Market has become the local Saturday morning meeting place, and the cellar’s yard is also the host venue for important, regular Wines of Hermanus and the Overberg Region Wine Festivals.
