HERMANUS-PIETERSFONTEIN

Hermanuspietersfontein, once the original name of the village founded in 1855, is now the name of the home of Monsieur Sauvignon Blanc, winemaker Bartho Eksteen. Wine names like Kleinboet, Bloos, Die Martha, Posmeester and Swartskaap are favoured by all cultures and are in memory of Hermanus Pieters, who came to the area to steach children in Dutch, forerunner to Afrikaans.

The cellar is known for its Sauvignon Blancs, Bordeaux and Rhône-style blends … but, every family has a black sheep: Swartskaap is a single varietal 100% Cabernet Franc and received the ’08 and ’09 SA Terroir Award, Best Cabernet Franc in South Africa. Grapes come from their Biodiversity and Wine Initiative champion farm, the only in this region to date. “Winemaking starts in the vineyard,” isn’t lip service - it’s a philosophy manifested in reputation gained in three short years. Farm cottages present the opportunity to experience the tranquillity and beauty of the place where the wine is made.

Commitment to community building is evident in their popular Saturday Food & Wine Market. The cellar’s yard is the new village meeting place and hosts quarterly Wines of Hermanus and the Overberg Region wine festivals where 20 cellars converge to present their wines and extend real Overberg hospitality and friendship.
