Stanford
The Klein River winds down the Akkedisberg valley and the river banks are turning a deep green as more and more vineyards are planted every year. Not yet a big feature on wine route or tourism maps, this wine making area nonetheless produces some stunning wines. Most of the grapes are grown on river banks or mountainsides, producing a distinctive character for the area. The acclaimed labels include Raka, Springfontein and Stanford Hills, known for their Shiraz, Chenin Blanc and Pinotage respectively. Stanford itself is a village rich in old world character, historic buildings and a lazy, country life pace. An excellent birding, hiking and getaway destination where wine can be enjoyed slowly.
