The wine growers of this exacting coastal environment are passionate pioneers of the soil and conservation. Not only have they succeeded in producing outstanding wines from the windswept, gravelly, limestone soils, they have incorporated their farms into the Nuwejaars Wetland Special Management Area Initiative, a project to protect the natural resources of the Agulhas Plain. The vineyards of this area contend with cool, often gale-force winds coming off the cold Atlantic that result in low yields of intensely flavoured grapes. It is a fascinating landscape to visit, rich in history and now with the added attraction of game that has been introduced into the NWSAI. Take time and stay over to explore…
