Hermanus

Take a meander up the winding road of the Heaven and Earth Valley (Hemelen-Aarde on the roadsigns) and soak up the natural beauty of the tree-lined river, the towering peaks of Babylonstoring and the Raed na Gael mountains, the exquisite Fynbos and the neat rows of vineyards. It is soul food.

This road will also take you to the cellars of some of the best wines in the country. Start at the very beginning though – at the Hemel en Aarde Village where two cellar doors and a wine merchant extraordinaire wait to welcome you. Visit on a Saturday morning and join the throng at the morning food market.

The winemakers here are known for their pinot noir, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, some of the finest wines in the country, but there is no lack of innovation as an enthusiastic tasting will attest to.

From single varietals to complex blends, the wines are terroir driven and attention to quality is paramount. Dont let the end of the tar be the end of your explorations, some very exciting wines and warm welcomes await you further along the gravel road.

Several estates offer delicious platters, food pairings and picnics and there are restaurants for those who would like to savour the seasonal fare of the area.
