Elgin

The Garden of Eden and the Valley of splendour are the names given to the Elgin and Theewaterskloof areas respectively by their enthusiastic residents and they are not wrong. Both regions are lush fruit baskets resonant with the buzz of bees and aromatic with the smell of ripe apples, pears and nectarines in summer.

Neat rows of vines are taking up more and more of the land and no wonder, the height of the vineyards make this the coolest wine growing area in the Cape. The cool growing climate results in slow ripening grapes and intense flavours, thus producing some of the country’s finest Sauvignon Blancs, Rieslings and Chardonnays.

The Theewaterskloof Dam has a further cooling influence on the climate and provides a spectacular foreground to many of the vineyards. Home to the first wine and biodiversity eco route, visitors can combine wine tasting with tours into the fynbos, rare renosterveld and mountains with the reward of sightings of black eagles, African fish eagles and many antelope.
